MAK.E.IBA was founded by creative director Kaye Applewaite, a visionary designer whose work is steeped in the rich, layered heritage of the Caribbean. Born in Barbados to a Barbadian father and a St. Lucian mother, Kaye’s creative language was shaped by the vibrant textures, stories, and traditions of both islands. Her early love for design was sparked by a deep appreciation for traditional Caribbean craftsmanship, from basket weaving and crochet to embroidery and jewelry-making.

A graduate of Parsons School of Design in New York City, where she earned the title of Designer of the Year, Kaye went on to sharpen her perspective at Adidas, where she contributed to cutting-edge collaborations at the intersection of culture, sport, and streetwear. It was in these global, creative spaces that the idea of MAK.E.IBA first began to take shape.

At its core, MAK.E.IBA is a modern homage to Caribbean identity. The brand creates a refined dialogue between heritage and innovation, drawing deeply from the traditions of the region and the expansive reach of the African diaspora. Every piece is a celebration of artistry and spirit, crafted to preserve, evolve, and elevate.

Made entirely in Barbados, MAK.E.IBA stands as a commitment to empowering local talent and sustaining creative ecosystems across the diaspora. Each design is intentionally timeless, built to journey through generations while honoring the past and imagining what’s next.
